Heathers’ Beekeeping is a family run business, located on 5 acres in the Perth foothills of Kelmscott, only a 40-minute drive from the Perth CBD.
We run short 4-hour courses to help people of all ages and standards to improve their knowledge of beekeeping. These courses are run monthly during the warmer months on a Saturday or Sunday.
Course numbers are restricted to 12 (8 since COVID to allow for social distancing). The SafeWA app. is used to record attendance in case of a requirement for contact tracing.
Courses are presented by Brett Heather and managed by his partner, Zoe Heather. With a Bachelor degree in Commerce and Horticulture and a PhD in Life and Biomolecular Sciences, respectively, Brett and Zoe are well placed to pass on their scientific knowledge.
Brett has lectured at Curtin University and been a guest speaker working with PEAK accelerated learning kids at WA schools. An avid beekeeper, Brett also has extensive work experience in the horticultural industry around the world.

Starting as a boy, with an interest in the natural world, Brett raised his own beehives from a young age. As his years advanced, so too did his knowledge of beekeeping, gained from his own experimentation at home and with a friend’s hives whilst working in the UK. Over more than 20 years, Brett has spent time applying different strategies and more recently trialling modern equipment including plastic frames/hives and FLOW HIVES.
Several years have been spent trying out different approaches to queen rearing and have included the supply of queens to some commercial apiarists. With contacts within the WA beekeeping community, including the Rottnest Island Breeding Program, Brett has been able to utilise some of the latest information and genetics.
Brett, a natural educator, particularly enjoys sharing his knowledge with people new to beekeeping that are interested in learning the fundamentals and to those more experienced beekeepers looking to get the most out of their hives or wanting to try out new things and do a little bit more with their bees.
Brett and Zoe have been running fun beekeeping courses for over 3 years. Attendees share their experiences in a relaxed fashion, whilst Brett leads them through the various topics of beekeeping. Questions are always encouraged and answered with great enthusiasm. Usually theory is covered first, followed by a break for tea/coffee with cake and biscuits. Then the bee suits are put on and the party ventures outside to explore the beehives.
